Abbott Seeks Alumni Input For Book On Davidson |
|
Tony Abbott would like your help in writing an epilogue to his Davidson College career. "Former students often tell me stories about things I have completely forgotten, but which would make wonderful poetry," he explained. So he's asking all his 3,000 or so former students to write him about the notable experiences, exciting times, or unusual events of their Davidson careers. He intends to mine their recollections for material to create a book of poems that offer a retrospective on the 35 years he has spent at Davidson. Abbott said stories do not have to be about him and his courses, but may concern any other college events. Many of Abbott's previous poems have been inspired by his college career. He cited one entitled "Lines Composed While Sitting in My Office" about a girl who spoke in tongues during a class period. But he's hoping that recollections from former students now will dredge up a wealth of new memories sufficient for a complete book. "Other North Carolina poets write about nature and Southern things," he said. "But the only world I know is that of students and classrooms, so that's what I feel most compelled to write about."
